Fashion that could save your life

The other day I watched an incredible video (PS Watch this video first before scrolling through the rest of the post or you’ll spoil it for yourself! It’s worth it – honest!)

The Invisible Bicycle Helmet | Fredrik Gertten from Focus Forward Films on Vimeo.

The invisible bike helmet – Hövding, was invented by two amazing women – Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin:

These two entrepreneurs created this collar for cyclists, which contains a folded up airbag, that only opens up, triggered by sensors, if you happen to have an accident.

The actual collar is the visible part of the invention. The fabric is removable and can be changed to match your outfit! The company will be launching new designs all the time.

It’s designed to be worn by both men and women. Despite the crazy amount of cycling accidents on the road each year, the vast majority of cyclists don’t wear helmets. Mainly due to the fact that helmets are quite bulky and impractical to carry around but also because many people also think helmets look hideous!

Bike helmets have looked the same for years and I think it’s really revolutionary to cycling and to fashion what these two young women have done. It’s subtle, you can co-ordinate it with your outfit AND the best thing?! IT doesn’t mess up your hair!

It currently comes in two versions, plain black:

And in an orange paisley pattern:

Hövding is currently available on the company website, www.hovding.com, at a special advance price. Hövding will be available in stores in Spring 2011.
